Renewable Fuels for Tomorrow: A Green Chemistry–Focused Review of Biofuels and Hydrogen Energy

Author(s) Adurthi Surya Kumari
Country India
Abstract The accelerating impacts of climate change, depletion of fossil fuel reserves, and rising global energy demands have intensified the search for sustainable and environmentally benign energy alternatives. Renewable fuels such as biofuels and hydrogen energy have emerged as promising solutions due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security. This review critically evaluates recent advancements in biofuel and hydrogen energy technologies through the framework of green chemistry principles, including renewable feedstock utilization, energy efficiency, waste minimization, and environmentally friendly process design. Developments in biochemical and thermochemical biofuel production pathways—such as microbial fermentation, enzymatic catalysis, gasification, and pyrolysis—are discussed with emphasis on agricultural residues, algal biomass, and industrial waste as sustainable feedstocks. Progress in green hydrogen production via renewable-powered water electrolysis, biomass-derived hydrogen, and photocatalytic water splitting is also reviewed. Environmental performance is assessed using life cycle assessment and sustainability metrics. Overall, this review highlights the critical role of green chemistry and sustainable engineering in driving the transition towards low-carbon, resilient, and future-ready energy systems.
