Nature, Spirit and Ecology: Understanding Wordsworth through an Ecocritical Lens

Abstract An ecocritical reading of Wordsworth’s poetry reveal his profound engagement with nature as a living spiritual force, reflecting the romantic belief in the interdependence between the natural environment and human consciousness. As one of the major figures of the Romantic movement, Wordsworth viewed nature not merely as a backdrop for human experience but as an active participant in the moral and emotional growth of the individuals. His poems celebrate the harmony between humans and the natural world, advocating for a return to simplicity, humility and ecological awareness. From an ecocritical perspective, Wordsworth’s works anticipate modern environmental concerns by emphasising respect for the earth and offer profound insights into sustainable living and ethical relationships with nature. By analysing poems such as Tintern Abbey and The Prelude this study highlights the poet’s portrayal of nature not merely as a backdrop but as an active, nurturing presence that shapes consciousness and promotes inner growth. The paper also evaluates the relevance of Wordsworth’s ecological thought in today’s context of environmental crisis and encourages readers to reconnect with the earth and embrace moral responsibility toward environmental preservation.
