Abstract Background: Undernutrition amongst reproductive-aged women is a significant public health concern, particularly in regions like Eastern India. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among reproductive women (15-49 years) in the Eastern region in India, utilizing data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS).
Methods: Between 2019 and 2021, the National Family Health Survey was used to collect the data. Bivariate and multivariate analyses have been used to identify the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition among women in the eastern region of India.
Results: The study reveals alarming levels of undernutrition, with many women falling below the standard BMI. Larger households are at greater risk (AOR: 1.175), while higher education significantly lowers the odds (AOR: 0.622). Non-Hindus and urban households also show reduced risks (AOR: 0.787 and 0.861, respectively). Key drivers include socio-economic status, access to healthcare, and rural-urban disparities, with age and cultural factors further influencing malnutrition trends. Addressing these inequalities is crucial for improving women's health outcomes.
Conclusion: The study highlights the pressing need for targeted nutrition programs and policies that focus on enhancing dietary intake, improving healthcare access, and promoting education among women in the Eastern region of India. Addressing these challenges is critical not only for improving women’s health outcomes but also for ensuring better maternal and child health, as undernourished mothers are more likely to give birth to underweight or malnourished children.
