Gender Dynamics in The Dark Holds No Terror: Subverting Traditional Roles

Author(s) Suruchi Sharma, Dr. Mandvi Singh
Country India
Abstract The novel The Dark Holds No Terror by Shashi Deshpande deftly negotiates the complexity of gender stereotypes while questioning established social conventions and assumptions. This essay explores the ways that Deshpande challenges these preconceptions through her theme research, narrative devices, and character portrayals. This essay seeks to emphasize Deshpande's criticism of gender conventions and her support for personal power and autonomy by evaluating major characters and their roles as well as the novel's underlying themes. It is clear from an in-depth examination of the text that Deshpande's work offers a potent commentary on the limitations of gender stereotypes as well as the potential for struggle and change.
