Going Beyond GDP & Delving into Global Social Indices

Author(s) Ashlyn Elizabeth Augustine
Country India
Abstract Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has long been the dominant metric for assessing national progress. Yet, its limitations have become increasingly evident. This paper explores the evolution of GDP, critiques its shortcomings, and examines alternative social indices. These indices provide a more complete measure of societal well-being. By analyzing indices such as the Human Development Index (HDI), Social Progress Index (SPI), and others, this study highlights the need for a multi-dimensional approach. It advocates for policy shifts that prioritize human well-being over mere economic output. Through comparative analysis and case studies, it supports this stance.
