Abstract | Tree diversity is critical to global biodiversity, providing essential ecological, economic, and cultural benefits. With over 60,000 known species, trees are vital for ecosystem functioning, supporting wildlife, enhancing soil health, and contributing to climate regulation. This review highlights the importance of tree diversity, detailing its ecological benefits, such as resilience to environmental stressors, and its significant economic contributions, including timber and medicinal resources. It also addresses cultural significance and the recreational opportunities forests provide. However, tree diversity faces numerous threats, including deforestation, climate change, and invasive species, leading to habitat loss and reduced genetic diversity. Effective conservation strategies, such as establishing protected areas, reforestation efforts, and community engagement, are essential for preserving this diversity. Furthermore, diverse forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks and enhancing ecosystem resilience. Protecting tree diversity is imperative for sustainable development and the well-being of future generations. |
