Women’s Representation: A brief Analysis on the 106th Constitutional Amendment and Beyond

Author(s) Ms. Parishi Kishor Virani
Country India
Abstract The 106th Constitutional Amendment marks a pivotal move toward gender equality in Indian politics by reserving one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women. Aimed at correcting historical underrepresentation—previously just 14.94% in the Lok Sabha and 14.05% in the Rajya Sabha—the amendment's success hinges on active implementation by institutions like the Election Commission and the National Commission for Women. To overcome challenges such as tokenism and systemic barriers, India can draw from global models, advocating measures like extending reservation to the Rajya Sabha, mandating 50% women candidates, and offering leadership training. While a landmark reform, true gender parity demands sustained legal, institutional, and societal transformation.
