Exploring the Postmodern Elements in Ferris’ "To Rise Again at a Decent Hour"

Abstract | The novel To Rise Again at a Decent Hour by Joshua Ferris is a prime example of postmodern literature because of its complex narrative structure, rich thematic depth, and nuanced characters. The main character, Paul O’Rourke, is a successful dentist who struggles with existential dread, illustrating the contradictions that characterize contemporary life. The postmodern state, in which characters frequently deal with absurdity and alienation in their day-to-day lives, is reflected in this duality. Ferris emphasizes the gap between one’s own self-perception and social expectations by using a fractured narrative style that reflects O’Rourke’s disorganized thoughts. The novel’s examination of identity is especially postmodern because O’Rourke’s conflict between his online and real-life identities emphasizes how ubiquitous digital culture is in shaping individual identities. Ferris criticizes the fixation on social media in modern society, showing how it intensifies emotions of loneliness and bewilderment over one’s place in the world. Ferris’s use of satire and dark humor accentuates the story’s postmodern aspects. Readers are prompted to consider their own experiences of modernity by the complex emotional landscape created by the serious themes and humorous undertones. In the end, To Rise Again at a Decent Hour is a profound commentary on the human condition that, through its examination of existentialism, technology, and identity, embodies the spirit of postmodern literature. |
