Model Context Protocol (MCP): Enabling Scalable AI Data Integration

Abstract With the rapid evolution of intelligent systems such as the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-physical systems, and autonomous agents, there is a growing need for communication protocols that go beyond traditional data exchange. Conventional protocols like TCP/IP and routing mechanisms primarily focus on the reliable delivery of data but lack the ability to convey the context in which the data was generated. This absence often leads to ambiguity, inefficiencies, and poor adaptability in dynamic environments.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) addresses this gap by embedding contextual metadata—such as location, time, environmental conditions, and device state—into each communication exchange. By enabling systems to interpret not just the data but also its meaning within a given context, MCP facilitates context-aware communication, improving decision-making and system responsiveness. MCP is especially relevant for modern distributed systems where real-time awareness and adaptability are critical.
