Revolutionary voice of Tarabai Shinde in Colonial India: Feminism, Gender equality and educational reform

Author(s) Mr. PINAKI DAS
Country India
Abstract The revolutionary voice of Tarabai Shinde in colonial India marks a significant milestone in the discourse on feminism, gender equality, and educational reform. As one of the earliest Indian feminists, Shinde’s seminal work Stri Purush Tulana (A Comparison Between Women and Men) published in 1882, challenged the entrenched patriarchal norms and social injustices faced by women in 19th-century Indian society. This research critically examines Shinde’s contributions within the socio-political framework of colonial India, highlighting how her radical critique of gender roles and caste oppression disrupted dominant narratives of her time. The study explores the intersectionality of her feminist thought, which not only contested male supremacy but also questioned the complicity of religious orthodoxy and caste hierarchy in perpetuating gender-based discrimination. Furthermore, Shinde’s advocacy for women’s education is analysed as a transformative tool for empowerment, emphasizing her belief that intellectual development and awareness were essential for societal progress and equality. Through a textual and contextual analysis of her writings and reformist engagements, the research elucidates her role in laying the ideological foundation for later feminist and social reform movements in India. By situating her voice within the broader framework of 19th-century reformist thought, this study also reflects on the resistance she faced from both conservative and progressive circles, underscoring the radical nature of her assertions. Ultimately, this research reclaims Tarabai Shinde’s legacy as a pioneering figure whose bold articulation of feminist consciousness, advocacy for gender justice and emphasis on educational reform continue to resonate in contemporary debates on women’s rights and social equity in India. Her contributions remain a testament to the power of dissent and intellectual courage in the face of systemic oppression.
