Abstract South Indian temples are not merely the abode of God or site of worship; they are the “cradle of knowledge” experienced across ages. These temples are living sites of the spiritual practice of the people in the region and their collective history, belief, and culture. Temple folklore and customs have persisted throughout history and into the present, significantly impacting the socio-cultural life of the people and upholding traditional Indian values. This paper examines the Jambukeswarar Temple at Tiruvanaikaval and its folklore. The folklore on the temple has been collected for the study through ethnography methodology, and through its analysis, it seeks to explore its cultural diversity. The objective of this paper is to understand to what extent the South Indian temple’s folklore reflects cultural diversity.
Keywords Folklore, Saivism, South Indian Temple, Cultural Diversity.
