Knowledge Regarding Newborn Care in Primipara Mothers

Abstract | A descriptive study to assess the knowledge regarding newborn care in primipara mothers in view to develop and administer information booklet in selected hospital Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Objectives are to assess the knowledge of mothers regarding newborn care, to develop an information booklet on newborn care and to determine the association between demographical variables and knowledge regarding newborn care. A descriptive research approach were used for the study on knowledge regarding essential newborn care in primipara mother. The study were conducted in the selected hospital of Haldwani, Uttarakhand. Convenient sampling technique were used to select the study participation. Data were collected from 50-primipara mother by using self-developed questionnaire. Finding related to socio-demographical variables it were observed that out of 50 primipara mothers, maximum (44%) of participants were in the age group between 20-24 years and minimum (6%) 35-39 years. Majority (42%) of mother’s residence in rural, and in semi-urban 12(24%). Maximum of (70%) women were Hindu and (6%) women were Sikh and Christian. Most of participation had High School (36%), and 01(2%) had no formal education. Majority of Occupation of mother is Housewife (70%) and minimum is farmer (2%), Government job (2%). Most out of the participant’s husband works as Private Job (38%) and minimum are Self-employee (6%). Maximum women family income per month in between 5,001-10,000 (24%). Most of the mothers attend the antenatal programme (68%). Maximum women Gestational age in between of mother is 31 weeks – 38 weeks (48%). Majority of mother’s takes the antenatal visit during pregnancy state is > 5 times (28%). Mostly (80%) participants were living in a joint family and (6%) were living in a nuclear living. Most of the mother’s family members are not from health departments (80%). Finding related to knowledge questionnaires Breast feeding Shows that the mothers responding most to the first feed of baby and best milk for baby is 44(88%). Maintaining warmth shows that the mothers responding most for during bath which organ is to protect 34(68%). Immunization shows that the majority shows the responds to advantage of immunization is 25(50%). Umbilical cord care Shows most of the responders’ responses to the type oil used for umbilical cord is 35(70%). Eye care shows that the participants give maximum response to method of cleaning baby eye 25(50%). Finding related to Association between socio-demographic variables with knowledge score the majority of 12 (24%) mothers having good knowledge who are graduated. The majority of 10 (20%) mothers having good knowledge who were living in rural area. The majority of 18 (36%) mother having good knowledge who were Hindu. The majority of 15 (30%) mothers having good knowledge who were homemaker the following conclusion were drawn by the basis of the findings of the study. Most of the participants were found in average category of knowledge regarding Essential Newborn Care. Hence, it is possible to provide a booklet regarding Essential Newborn Care. Consequently, there was no significant association found between selected socio-demographic variable with knowledge score of samples in selected hospital, Haldwani. |
