Abstract | This study examines the profound impact of Shakespearean adaptations on global cinema and theatre, focusing on how these reinterpretations reflect, reshape, and respond to contemporary cultural, political, and social dynamics. Shakespeare’s timeless works continue to inspire filmmakers and playwrights worldwide, who adapt his narratives to engage with modern issues such as power, identity, race, gender, and societal structures. By analysing a selection of key adaptations—such as Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet (1996), Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara (2006), Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood (1957), and Julie Taymor’s The Tempest (2010)—this study explores how these works reimagine the original plays in diverse global contexts. The research highlights the ability of Shakespeare’s texts to transcend cultural boundaries, offering a flexible platform for filmmakers and theatre directors to comment on contemporary issues like political corruption, caste systems, gender equality, and the complexities of postcolonial identity. Drawing from adaptation theory, postcolonial studies, and cultural criticism, the study employs a comparative analysis methodology, combining primary and secondary sources to uncover the ways in which these adaptations engage with modern societal concerns. The findings reveal that Shakespeare’s plays, in their various forms, continue to serve as powerful tools for cultural dialogue, offering insights into universal themes while also responding to the specific social and political contexts in which they are adapted. Ultimately, this study underscores the enduring relevance of Shakespearean adaptations, demonstrating their capacity to reshape narratives for contemporary audiences while preserving the core themes of the original works. |
