Abstract Social media has grown to be a potent influence on how people view themselves in a time when digital connections permeate every aspect of everyday life, particularly for young adults. This study examines the effects of social media addiction on body image and social comparison, as well as how these elements work together to affect self-esteem. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Social Comparison Scale (SCS), Body Image Questionnaire (BIQ), and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were among the standardized tools used to gather data from 130 young adults between the ages of 16 and 25 as part of a correlational study design. The results showed a moderately positive correlation between internet addiction and social comparison (r = .567, p < .05), a weak but significant positive correlation between internet addiction and self-esteem (r = .275, p < .01), and a strong positive correlation between internet addiction and body image dissatisfaction (r = .765, p < .05). These findings point to a complicated interaction whereby excessive social media use leads to heightened social comparison and skewed judgments of body image, which may compromise stable self-worth. The study emphasizes the need for mental health techniques and digital literacy treatment that support young adults’ mindful social media use and positive self-concept.
