Abstract Patient-centered care (PCC) is an approach to care that focuses on the needs, preferences and values of patients in the decisions they make about their care and in the delivery of care. This review will review the literature on the effectiveness and impact of PCC on the quality of health care based on relevant English language peer-reviewed studies in various practice settings. Overall, the review of studies points that PCC enhances patient satisfaction with care, communication with care providers, as well as care outcomes and includes several principles that accompany PCC (i.e., respect, shared decision-making, coordinated care; barriers like communication and narrowly defined financial or temporal resources). The evidence indicates, through a thematic analysis that PCC requires being integrated into quality improvement techniques, delivered by healthcare professionals, fostered via healthcare organizations and integrated into policy. Inclusion of PCC into the hard work of sustainable patient-centered quality improvement, and proactive patient interest included in the care procedure is an act which requires not just wish but also execution in mainstream medical practice.
