| Abstract | Background: Extra-Uterine Growing Restriction (EUGR) distresses an enormous percentage of the individuals born prematurely and adds to under five deaths apart from that, this bring many late complication of neurological functions and the effect of medication to the premature babies. Prevalence of EUGR and understanding concerning predisposing factors in Tanzania are missing. The current study has exploring the prevalence rate, and its predisposing factors associated premature babies in central, and Southern Tanzania. Methodology: A Cross Sectional study of conveniently selected 156 premature Dodoma, Iringa, and Mbeya in Tanzania were selected purposeful. Selected babies were monitored in 28 days following delivery. EUGR evaluated using the WHO Fenton Chart for the babies who had ≥2500g singleton while multivariate Logistic Regression statistical analysis were used to present the predisposing factors of the EUGR. Results: Among the assessed babies the respondent rate was (146) 94%, most of the premature babies were male, and their Mean birth weights were 1,647.16 ± 401.15g. The prevalence of EUGR as evaluated by weight was 62%, 70% as measured by length and 44.85% as measured by head circumference. GA was associated with Extra Uterine Growth Restriction; whereby weight, length, and head circumference were; (χ2=38.726; p =0.01), (χ2=10.353; p =0.02)., and (χ2=5.776; p =0.016) respectively. And on delivery both weight, head circumference, and the length was associated with Extra Uterine Growth Restriction (p<0.039). The EUGR were strongly associated with; the duration of stay at hospital, weight at birth, length, and head circumference. Conclusion: The study found high prevalence of EUGR among premature babies assessed in 28 days following delivery, and there were relationship between premature baby’s’ weight, length, and Head Circumference with EUGR. EUGR were associated with GA, duration of staying at the health facility, Weight at birth, Length, and Head Circumference. |
