Biometric Surveillance and Power Dynamics in the Indian Office Context: A Panoptic and Orwellian Examination

Author(s) Mr. Tamal Sau, Ms. Rukmita Pal
Country India
Abstract This paper examines the escalating deployment of biometric surveillance technologies within Indian corporate environments, analyzing its profound impact on workplace power dynamics, employee psychology, and socio-cultural norms. Utilizing the theoretical frameworks of Foucault's Panopticon and Orwell's dystopian prophecies, the analysis reveals how these surveillance systems, often justified by corporate rationales of efficiency and security, contribute to the internalization of discipline, heightened psychological distress, and an erosion of employee autonomy. The paper investigates the architecture of control, including fingerprint, facial, and iris recognition, amplified by AI-driven analytics, and its interaction with India's high power-distance culture, which may foster performative conformity. It scrutinizes the Indian legal landscape, particularly the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, assessing its effectiveness in safeguarding employee privacy against the backdrop of inherent power imbalances and the rise of algorithmic management. The study concludes by critiquing techno-solutionist narratives and proposing recommendations for policymakers, organizations, and future research to cultivate a more human-centric, equitable, and ethically sound technological future in Indian workplaces, mitigating the risks of creating a "digital caste system."
