A Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Risk Factors and Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus among the Adults in Selected Urban Community, Guwahati

Abstract | Background : Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by a cardinal biochemical feature, caused by deficiency of Insulin, its action or both manifested by abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Diabetes Mellitus is classified into four types andtheyareType1DiabetesMellitus,Type-2DiabetesMellitus,SecondaryDiabetesMellitus and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. Objectives: To assess knowledge regarding risk factors and preventing strategies for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, To find out the association between knowledge regarding risk factors and preventing strategies for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with selected demographic variable among adults. Materials and methods: The study adopted a Descriptive cross sectional survey research design, 70 adults residing in a selected Urban community, Guwahati were recruited as sample of the study using non-probability convenience sampling technique. the tool used for the study are demographic variables and self-structured knowledge questionnaire. Data were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The findings of the study revealed that, out of 70 adults 23 (32.86%) of the adults were in the age group 31-40, 39 (55.71%) of the adults were male, 52 (74.28%) of the adults were non vegetarian, most 37(52.86%) of the adults were have previous knowledge regarding risk factors and prevention of Type2 Diabetes Mellitus, 34(48.57%) of adults are known about the Diabetes Mellitus from the family and friends , 50 (71.43%) of the adults did not have Diabetic problem, 29(41.43%) of the adults had moderate and adequate knowledge regarding Diabetes Mellitus. The present study revealed that majority 29 (41.43%) of the adults had adequate knowledge and moderate knowledge and 12 (17.14%) had inadequate knowledge regarding risk factors and prevention of Diabetes Mellitus with obtained score range between (7-16), with median score of 9 and mean knowledge score was 10.91 with standard deviation 2.35. There was significant association of knowledge regarding Diabetes Mellitus among adults with selected demographic variables. Conclusion: The study concluded that knowledge regarding risk factors and prevention of Diabetes Mellitus among the adults was adequate and moderate knowledge. |
