The Economic Value of Unpaid Care: Understanding Motherhood’s Role in Nation-Building

Author(s) Prof. Heena Dharmesh Gandhi
Country India
Abstract Unpaid care work, particularly that performed by mothers, remains a silent but powerful force behind economic and social development. This article talks about the economic and social value of unpaid care work done by mothers. It shows how their time, love, and support play a big role in shaping individuals and communities. While this work is not paid, it is crucial for building a responsible and productive society. Though absent from GDP figures and policy debates, this work shapes the minds, emotions, and values of future citizens. This article explores the intersection of economics, psychology, and civic development through the lens of motherhood. Drawing from real-life stories, behavioral theory, and feminist economics, it argues for the urgent recognition of unpaid care as a foundation of nation-building. It concludes with policy suggestions to support mothers and mainstream care work into public discourse.
