Beyond the stethoscope: A wellness check-in for nurses

| Abstract | Nurse well-being is essential to healthcare quality and patient safety. According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), a healthy nurse cultivates physical, mental, social, environmental, and professional well-being. This aligns with Provision Five of the 2025 Code of Ethics, which emphasizes the moral obligation for nurses to prioritize self-care and maintain a sustainable work-life balance. However, nurses face widespread challenges such as burnout, compassion fatigue, workplace violence, inadequate staffing, and toxic work environments. These factors are interrelated and can significantly impact both nurse health and patient outcomes. Although many healthcare organizations offer wellness initiatives, these efforts often exclude frontline nurse input and fail to address systemic barriers. Research highlights the importance of individualized strategies, supportive leadership, and equitable workplace policies. National recommendations advocate for structural reforms, including legislative changes and inclusive practices. Ultimately, nurse well-being must be recognized as a professional, organizational, and ethical priority—integral to a safe and effective healthcare system. |
