Abstract | America is facing keen competition from rivals like China in the quest for global science, engineering, and technology supremacy. The growth of Artificial Intelligence and the semiconductor industry demands a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce capable of harnessing the immense opportunities by the strength of their numbers and the quality of their expertise. This review traces the origins of STEM and the efforts of governmental institutions to facilitate its growth. The role of educational institutions is also examined. The paper also highlights some of the partnerships and collaborations by corporate America in a bid to cultivate talent for the STEM industry. Amidst all these efforts, profound challenges remain, and this review highlights some of the solutions proffered to address these challenges and maximize a field critical to human existence. |
