Decoding AI’s Role in Predicting Financial Crises: Can Algorithms Prevent the Next Market Meltdown?

| Abstract | This paper investigates the potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in forecasting and potentially preventing future financial crises. Through an analysis of historical financial collapses, particularly the 1929 Great Depression and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, this study explores the root causes of economic downturns and evaluates whether modern AI applications can provide earlier and more accurate warnings of systemic risks. Drawing on contemporary examples such as JPMorgan’s LOXM, Google DeepMind’s financial modeling, and Bridgewater Associates’ AI-driven strategies, the paper demonstrates that AI excels in anomaly detection, predictive modeling, and enhancing financial decision-making. However, AI's efficacy remains limited by data quality, transparency challenges, and its inability to account for unprecedented black swan events. Furthermore, AI lacks the authority to enforce preventive action, leaving responsibility in the hands of human decision-makers and regulatory bodies. This research concludes that AI, when integrated within a strong governance framework and paired with human expertise, holds significant promise as a supplementary tool for financial crisis mitigation, but cannot serve as a standalone solution. |
