Abstract Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are suffering from complication that with long term could lead to death; one of the most important complications is anemia. No enough data regarding the exact cause of anemia in patients with CKD in Sudan. This study aimed to figure out the exact cause using serum iron, serum ferritin, red blood cells count and hemoglobin as markers of iron status.
Study design
This is a cross sectional analytical study that aimed to evaluate red blood cell count, hemoglobin, iron and ferritin in chronic kidney disease patients. This study is conducted on 100 chronic kidney disease patients and 100 controls in Khartoum state in period between August to September 2022.
Methods and materials
200 venous blood samples were collected in EDTA anticoagulant and heparin anticoagulant tubes, blood samples were analyzed by mindary BC -5000, spinreact and roche e411. Data obtained are analyzed statistically by SPSS version 16 using independent T test and One-way ANOVA test.
Results
Result showed a significant change in serum iron (64.7 ± 41.34) and ferritin (795.3 ± 618.57), p values (0.01 and 0.01), respectively, in cases when compared to control. There is a slight change in Hb (10.1 ± 1.73) with p value 0.06. No significant change in RBCS count (3.5 ± 0.85) with p value (0. 39).
Conclusion
The study concluded that anemia in patients with CKD can occur because of iron reduction
