A Glimpse in to the World of Quarks

Abstract Quarks are fundamental variety of matter, like leptons. All hadrons (baryons and mesons) are made up of these fundamental units, quarks. The Mendeleev’s periodic table of atomic elements, in 1869, pointed towards a fundamental structure of matter common to all atoms. Nearly 50 years later, the discovery that atoms consisted of electrons revolving a nucleus confirmed this. Similarly, the observation of a periodic pattern among the existing hadrons (called as the eightfold way pattern), during 1960, pointed the possibility of a more fundamental variety of matter-quarks- out of which all hadrons, including protons and neutrons , are formed. With the discovery of the 6th and the last quark –the top quark- in 1995, at Fermi Lab, confirmation about the existence of the all the quarks was proved.
