Securing Data at Rest: Evaluating Encryption Strategies for Databases and File Systems

Author(s) Ishva Kanani
Country India
Abstract Data at rest refers to inactive data stored in databases, file systems, or other storage platforms. With the exponential growth of digital information and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, securing data at rest has become a cornerstone of modern cybersecurity. This paper evaluates the encryption strategies used to secure data in both database systems and file storage infrastructures. We explore key-based encryption models, transparent data encryption (TDE), file-level versus block-level encryption, key management challenges, and compliance implications. By comparing implementation methods, performance trade-offs, and security postures, we aim to guide architects and security practitioners toward sound data protection strategies
Keywords Data at Rest, Database Encryption, File System Security, Transparent Data Encryption, Key Management, AES, Compliance.
