Neoliberalism and the Transformation of Public Education in India

Abstract This paper aims to focus on how education has been affected by neoliberalism. The paper discusses the Indian experience to understand how the neoliberal ideology and the resultant practise of state have impacted the nature of school education. The paper looks at the changes in Indian educational policy since the country’s economy opened itself to Structural Adjustments in the 90’s. The paper argues that neoliberalism has impacted the Indian school system by redefining the meaning of education and has serious consequences for the teaching community.
