Historical Approach to M. M. Kaye’s The Far Pavilions

Author(s) Dr. Rajashekhar. M Yarbagi
Country India
Abstract M. M. Kaye’s The Far Pavilions (1978) is one of the most celebrated works of historical fiction set during the British Raj in India. Blending romance, adventure, and historical reality, the novel transports readers to the complex world of late 19th-century colonial India, marked by political intrigue, cultural diversity, and the tensions of empire. This paper examines The Far Pavilions through the historical approach in literary criticism, which seeks to understand a work in the light of the time, place, and circumstances in which it was created and set. By situating the narrative within the socio-political background of the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–1880), Anglo-Indian relations, and the cultural fabric of princely states, the study reveals how Kaye skilfully interweaves authentic historical events with fictional storytelling. The research draws on historical records, literary criticism, and cultural studies to assess the novel’s accuracy, its portrayal of colonial society, and the ways in which it engages with themes of identity, loyalty, and cultural hybridity. The analysis finds that Kaye’s narrative offers not only an engaging romance but also a valuable fictional lens through which readers can explore the history of colonial India.
