When the Body Mimics Illness: Linking Psychological Stress to Bodily Symptoms

| Abstract | Psychosomatic responses — where emotional or psychological stress triggers physical symptoms — have been observed for centuries, but modern science now provides insight into why they occur. Stress activates the brain’s hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These chemicals prepare the body for “fight or flight” but can also disrupt digestion, weaken immunity, and cause headaches, muscle tension, or fatigue. In academic, professional, and social settings, this mind–body link can significantly impact performance and well-being. Understanding this connection helps us develop strategies to manage stress before it takes a physical toll. |
