Abstract The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent an international initiative established by the United Nations (UN) to eradicate poverty, protecting the environment, and ensuring that all individuals can live in peace and prosperity by the year 2030. Millets have increasingly emerged as vital contributors to the attainment of these SDGs due to their distinctive characteristics and numerous advantages. Given the current challenges posed by changing climatic conditions and the prevalence of hidden hunger, targeted research and development efforts focused on millets are essential for achieving food, feed, and nutrition security. Millets are rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals, making them highly nutritious and possessing the potential to bolster food security significantly. However, a comprehensive review on the subject of millets is currently lacking. This study aims to address this deficiency by conducting a bibliometric analysis of the literature, utilizing the VOSviewer and Bibliometric R-package to explore the role of millets in promoting food security. To this end, we meticulously analyzed 1,193 documents from the Scopus database to assess publication trends within this domain. The investigation into the topics addressed in this field has yielded insights into its historical development, as well as providing a systematic review of highly cited articles.
