STATUTORY INTERPRETATION IN ADMINISTRATIVE LAW : THE CHEVVRON DEFERENCE DOCTRINE
| Author(s) | Ms. Sristi Smaran |

| Abstract | Abstract This paper analyzes the Chevron deference doctrine, a cornerstone of U.S. administrative law that governs judicial review of agency interpretations of statutes. It traces the doctrine’s origins in Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council (1984), explains its two-step framework, and examines its application across regulatory fields. The study highlights major criticisms regarding separation of powers and agency overreach, alongside reform proposals and recent judicial limitations. By situating Chevron within evolving jurisprudence, the paper evaluates its future role in balancing agency expertise, judicial oversight, and legislative authority. |
| Keywords | Keywords Chevron deference, statutory interpretation, administrative law, judicial review, separation of powers, agency authority, major questions doctrine, U.S. Supreme Court. |
