Abstract This study looks at how senior secondary students in three academic streams—Arts, Commerce, and Science—use social networking sites (SNS) and how their critical thinking skills differ by gender. There were 300 students in all, 150 males and 150 females. Each stream had 100 students, with males and females evenly split. The study used standardised evaluation instruments to gather data on critical thinking and SNS characteristics. To find out if there were any disparities between males and females, independent samples t-tests were used. There were big variations between males and females in the Arts stream when it came to ethics and values, curiosity, and being open-minded. In the Commerce stream, only self-regulation showed a big difference between males and females, with females doing better. In the Science stream, females did much better than males in terms of making inferences, being curious, and being open-minded. There were no big disparities between males and females in the Arts stream when it came to how they used SNS. But in the Commerce stream, males did much better than females on all SNS criteria. In the Science stream, females did much better than males in investigation, analysis, and being open-minded. These results imply that cognitive and behavioural patterns based on gender differ between academic fields, which has implications for targeted educational interventions.
