Formulation, Development and Evaluation of Transdermal Patchs of Antiemetic Drug

Abstract Transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) are innovative pharmaceutical dosage forms designed to deliver drugs across the skin at a controlled rate into the systemic circulation. This paper explores the structure and function of human skin as a barrier, the mechanisms of TDDS, and their applications in delivering drugs such as nicotine, fentanyl, buprenorphine, estrogen, and promethazine hydrochloride. It discusses advanced technologies like iontophoresis, electroporation, and microneedles that enhance transdermal drug absorption, alongside the limitations of TDDS, such as unsuitability for large-dose drugs or those with unfavorable partition coefficients. The paper also details the evaluation of transdermal patches, including drug compatibility, thickness, drug content, and in vitro release studies, with a focus on paclitaxel and promethazine hydrochloride. The results highlight the critical role of formulation components like polymers, adhesives, and penetration enhancers in optimizing drug delivery, alongside analytical methods to ensure stability and efficacy.
