Abstract The present paper aims to highlight the significance of foster care as an immediate rehabilitation option for unaccompanied children, rather than institutionalization, to address the psychosocial impacts of an unprecedented disaster. Disaster is a detrimental situation for everyone, which can profoundly impact children obstructing their sense of safety and stability. Traditionally, unaccompanied children are placed in institutional care, which may worsen their current condition in the name of expedient care and protection. Institutionalization should be the last resort in child rehabilitation and foremost preference should be given to non institutional care such as foster care. The core objective of the paper is to explore how foster care practice can be used for the rehabilitation of unaccompanied children post disaster and the significance of family based care in child care and protection. The researcher did content analysis by analyzing the secondary data gathered from journal, research articles, government data, annual reports, online sources etc. All the secondary data were insightfully reviewed and analyzed to write the research article. Hence, the present paper is exploratory in nature. Foster care provides a family environment with one to one care for the children to address their trauma and provides care and protection. Foster care promotes stability, emotional support, and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for healthy and harmonious development of a child. Effective interventions are essential to help children heal and regain a sense of normalcy post disaster. Adoption, sponsorship and foster care are the best available non institutional services for such children. Foster care can provide immediate rehabilitation for unaccompanied children. While planning interventions for disaster survivors, unaccompanied children require focused attention. Foster care can be a suitable and immediate rehabilitation facility for unaccompanied children.
