Why Protests Matter to Democracy?

Author(s) Aparna Ayyanad, Upendra C

Abstract This paper analyses the politics of protests in democratic societies. The nature of crowds has been studied to problematize the politics of protests. Multivocal crowds gathered in demonstrations as a collective corroborate the voices of ordinary people, and the demands of heterogeneous crowds composed of individuals who identify with various dispositions are upheld. These crowds create moments of equality based on recognition of injustice in societies. The paper argues that the events of protests are the political assemblages of people that are created, often attempted to be dismantled by the authorities, recreated, and propagated by crowds that are ordinary people in every democratic society.
