MARKET DYNAMICS AND PATHWAYS TO SUSTAINABLE GROWTH OF KOSA SILK IN CHHATTISGARH: AN ANALYTICAL STUDY

Author(s) Ms. Reetu Sharma
Country India
Abstract Kosa silk, renowned for its natural texture and cultural symbolism, holds a unique place in the socio-economic fabric of Chhattisgarh. Despite being one of the largest producers of silk in India, the region faces critical challenges such as limited market access, dominance of intermediaries, lack of branding, and insufficient technological support. This paper seeks to analyze the market dynamics of Kosa silk in Chhattisgarh, with a specific focus on production trends, demand-supply factors, price mechanisms, and sustainability challenges. The study is based on both primary observations and secondary sources including government reports, academic studies, and field-based data available for the Bilaspur Division of Chhattisgarh. Employing descriptive analysis and trend mapping, the research identifies major growth constraints while exploring opportunities for sustainable development. The findings reveal that while the demand for Kosa silk remains high in both domestic and global markets, inefficiencies in supply chains, poor infrastructure, and inadequate promotional mechanisms hinder its sustainable growth. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations to strengthen market structures, empower weavers, integrate digital platforms, and promote eco-friendly practices to ensure the long-term viability and global competitiveness of Kosa silk in Chhattisgarh.
