| Abstract | Ceramic is an exceptionally distinctive sculptural material and has captured the attention of a number of sculptors due to its unique qualities, properties and possibilities. Ceramic as a medium for a sculptor has always offered natural essence, amazing flexibility and several transformative properties. It can transform from soft to hard, fragile to strong and plain to colourful when an artist works with it. A sculptor can easily reshape, redesign, and completely change its nature through processes like molding, glazing, and firing. Apart from the artists, people in general also appreciate this medium in art. This study aims to show how ceramics have marked its presence in public spaces. It will discuss the use of different types of ceramic materials, explain their advantages in modern city sculptures and explore the techniques which have been used for the creation of the artworks mentioned. The unparalleled versatility and adaptability offered by ceramic intrigues artists to use it for expression in their sculptures. Being a direct medium, Ceramic enables an artist to record her expressions into the artwork spontaneously, which adds a sense of authenticity and leaves a permanent mark of the existence of artist into the artwork. Ceramic bears a natural essence that adds to the aesthetic quality of this medium. This relation to the earth itself makes a ceramic sculpture more real and connected to the viewer. Moreover, the inherent versatility of ceramic materials permits an artist to engage with diverse sculptural techniques—ranging from hand-building to wheel-throwing—thereby facilitating the physical expression of her creative visions with both technical precision and expressive fluidity. |
