Abstract The concepts of “interdisciplinary” and “multidisciplinary” have assumed significant prominence in recent decades, shaping both academic and popular discourses. Universities across the globe are actively promoting interdisciplinary scholarship, evident in initiatives such as the University of Michigan’s recruitment of faculty across diverse interdisciplinary fields and Northeastern University’s efforts to foster new areas of scholarship through cross-disciplinary collaboration. The rationale behind interdisciplinarity rests on the critique that academic disciplines, though necessary, are limited, fragmented, and often confining. Emerging initially within the social sciences in the 1920s, the concept gained traction after the Second World War and has since expanded into the natural sciences, humanities, and applied research domains. In NEP 2020 also we find a new thrust put on Interdisciplinary studies in all levels of education.
The aim of interdisciplinarity lies in addressing complex theoretical and practical problems that cannot be solved within the boundaries of single disciplines. Its advocates highlight flexibility, adaptability, and innovation as core strengths in contrast to the rigidity and repetitiveness often associated with disciplinary frameworks. Nonetheless, the relationship between disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity remains one of tension and dependence: interdisciplinarity borrows its tools, concepts, and methods from established disciplines, even while questioning their boundaries and promoting integration.
Critics argue that interdisciplinarity suffers from a lack of epistemic clarity, inadequate evaluative mechanisms, and potential institutional misuse, as universities may exploit it for market-driven goals such as cost-cutting and departmental restructuring. Furthermore, empirical studies suggest that interdisciplinary scholars face structural disadvantages within academia, including reduced economic returns. Despite these challenges, interdisciplinarity continues to flourish, as seen in the rise of fields such as molecular biology, environmental studies, women’s studies, and nanotechnology.
In conclusion, interdisciplinarity is not a rejection of disciplines but a dynamic and evolving response to their limitations. By fostering collaboration and synthesis, it holds promise as a vital mode of knowledge production in addressing pressing global and social concerns.
