| Abstract | Introduction: Trauma is a leading cause of death worldwide, particularly among young adults, with road traffic accidents being a major contributor. In India, road accidents claimed 1,53,972 lives in 2021, with the 18–45 age group being the most affected. Effective trauma care relies on timely and accurate triage, which prioritizes patients based on the severity of their condition. Globally, systems like the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) are widely used, but India lacks a standardized triage system, leading to inconsistencies in emergency care. The AIIMS Triage Protocol (ATP), implemented at AIIMS New Delhi, categorizes patients into "Red," "Yellow," and "Green" groups to manage high patient inflows effectively. Despite its effectiveness, variations in triage practices persist due to differences in healthcare providers’ knowledge, experience, and training. Studies show that structured triage training improves decision-making, reduces overcrowding, and enhances patient outcomes. Strengthening triage protocols and standardizing training programs can enhance trauma care in India, addressing the urgent need for an effective, nationwide emergency response system. |
