Abstract Recognized as the "Gateway to Northeast India," Guwahati's tourism potential is examined, as is its distinctive blend of natural, cultural, and spiritual resources. According to the research, the Kamakhya Temple is the city's main draw, underscoring its status as a popular pilgrimage and cultural tourism destination. Guwahati offers a multifaceted appeal with its combination of religious heritage, natural beauty, and easy access to wildlife reserves, in addition to the Brahmaputra River and the surrounding landscapes. Brahmaputra River Cruise, Umananda Temple, and shopping areas like Fancy Bazaar or Pan Bazaar also play an important role in tourism in Guwahati. Its development as a sustainable tourism destination is still hampered by a number of issues, though. Inadequate public transportation, poor waste management, traffic jams, a lack of tourist-friendly facilities, and inadequate safety precautions were among the recurring problems mentioned by the respondents.
Mixed visitor experiences are also a result of seasonal flooding and infrastructure deficiencies. Notwithstanding these drawbacks, the study shows that locals have favourable opinions of tourism, with respondents acknowledging its benefits for infrastructure development, job creation, and cultural preservation. Cleanliness, better connectivity, sustainable development, and increased support for regional customs and celebrations were all frequently highlighted in the recommendations. Future development priorities include heritage-based experiences, eco-tourism, and river tourism. Overall, the study indicates that Guwahati can effectively transform from a pilgrimage site into a varied and sustainable Indian tourism hub with careful planning and efficient administration.
