Abstract Abstract
The human body is home to trillions of microorganisms tiny living things such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses together known as the microbiome. These microbes live mainly in the gut, but also on the skin, in the mouth, and in other parts of the body. Far from being only harmful, many microbes are important partners in keeping us healthy. They help in digestion, produce vitamins, train the immune system, and even influence the brain. When the balance of these microbes is disturbed, a condition called “dysbiosis,” occurs leading to many diseases, including digestive problems, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and even mental health conditions. This paper explains the role of the microbiome in human health and disease, how researchers study it, and how new treatments such as probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) are being developed.
