| Abstract | Gandugali Kumara Rama (1290–1320 CE), also remembered as a valiant prince of the Kampli kingdom in present-day Karnataka, is revered in folklore and regional history for his bravery, sacrifice, and resistance against the Delhi Sultanate. Born to King Kampli Raya, Kumara Rama became a symbol of youthful heroism and undying patriotism. Despite being denied succession to the throne due to palace intrigues, he earned the title “Gandugali” (valiant warrior) for his unmatched courage in defending his land. He fought against the invasions of Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq and other adversaries, laying down his life at a young age. His life story, blending historical events with legends, greatly influenced the cultural and political consciousness of Karnataka. Kumara Rama’s valor is believed to have inspired later resistance movements, including the rise of the Vijayanagara Empire. Temples and memorials dedicated to him, particularly in Bellary district, continue to celebrate his sacrifice. Thus, Kumara Rama remains not only a historical figure but also a legendary folk hero embodying the ideals of bravery, sacrifice, and protection of dharma and motherland. |
