Pragmatics and Semantics of Online Linguistic Action: Politeness, Aggressiveness, and Irony in Algorithmic Environment

Author(s) Mr. Francesco Mercadante
Country Italy
Abstract The analysis of a corpus comprising 120 utterances drawn from interactions on social networks, supplemented by a targeted selection of 30 additional occurrences, reveals that users’ linguistic choices are strongly conditioned by algorithmic mediation. The orientation toward visibility—pursued through lexical salience, memetic formats, and semantic indexability—emerges as a transversal organizing principle, capable of shaping politeness, aggressiveness, and irony in relation to the optimization of ranking and engagement. From this perspective, acts of inclusive facework, direct Face-Threatening Acts, and ironic mock agreements appear not as accidental outcomes, but as strategic resources for enhancing discursive circulation.
