| Abstract | Assam is a North-Eastern regional state celebrated for its vibrant cultural and linguistic richness. It has an age-old tradition of drama that reflects the region’s history, social structure, and spirituality. This paper examines various dramatic forms of Assam, ranging from Srimanta Shankardeva’s classical Ankia Bhaona to 20th-century Baan theatre. It focuses on how these forms merge performance, music, and storytelling to deliver moral, spiritual, and social themes. The paper also explores the development of modern Assamese drama following its changes from the colonial period to the post-colonial period. It investigates how conventional elements have been amalgamated with contemporary themes to draw new forms of expression. With a mixed approach of textual analysis and performance review, this study showcases the journey of Assamese drama from the 15th century to the 20th century. This paper examines how custom, community, and art are connected in Assamese drama, showcasing its relevance both in the past and present. |
