| Abstract | The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, launched by the Government of India, highlights the importance of transformative changes in the education system, with a strong emphasis on incorporating counselling services within schools. These services are crucial for supporting students' emotional, social, and academic development. School counsellors play a key role in helping students manage issues such as stress, bullying, family problems, and mental health concerns, while also guiding conflict resolution and promoting overall well-being. By fostering a supportive and positive learning environment, counsellors contribute significantly to students' personal growth and career planning. The NEP 2020 outlines measures to provide mental health support and counselling as part of a holistic approach to student development. This paper examines the significance of counselling in the school setting, particularly in the context of NEP 2020 and other relevant Indian government policies and programs. It further explores the current needs, existing challenges, and practical strategies for the successful implementation of counselling services, as well as their broader impact on students' well-being and academic success. |
