Ecological Approaches on Building Surfaces: A Review of Green Facade Systems in the Context of Sustainability

Author(s) Neslihan Demircan
Country Turkey
Abstract Green facade systems have emerged as one of the most prominent ecological applications on building surfaces, placing them at the forefront of sustainability discussions in urban contexts. This review examines the typologies, ecological contributions, and practical challenges of green facades. The study evaluates the effects of green facades on energy efficiency, microclimate regulation, biodiversity enhancement, and user well-being, while also highlighting limitations such as maintenance requirements, structural risks, and plant selection issues. Findings suggest that, with proper planning and ecological adaptation, green facades can serve as powerful design tools for improving the quality of urban life.
