Abstract This study investigates the relationships among emotional intelligence (EI), empathy, and ethnocentrism within the Mizo population. Data from 610 participants were analyzed using Hayes’ PROCESS macro (Model 4) to test a mediation model with EI as the independent variable, empathy as the mediator, and ethnocentrism as the dependent variable. Results indicated that EI significantly predicted higher empathy (β = .349, p < .001) and lower ethnocentrism (β = –.0386, p < .001), while empathy also predicted lower ethnocentrism (β = –.0273, p < .001). The indirect effect of EI on ethnocentrism through empathy was significant (–.0095, 95% CI [–.0162, –.0039]), supporting partial mediation. Independent samples t-tests revealed significant group differences in empathy (t(608) = –4.05, p < .001), EI (t(608) = –2.09, p = .037), and ethnocentrism (t(608) = 4.98, p < .001). These findings suggest that emotional intelligence and empathy contribute to reduced ethnocentric attitudes, with empathy serving as a partial mediator of this relationship.
