Abstract The present study investigates the role of parenting style, gender, and locale in shaping the social competence of adolescents. A sample of 600 higher secondary school students (300 urban and 300 rural) from the Durg district were selected through random sampling. Data were collected using two standardized tools: the Parenting Style Scale developed by Madhu Gupta and Dimple Mehiani, and the Social Competence Scale developed by Latika Sharma and Punita Rani. Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (4 × 2 × 2 factorial ANOVA) were employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed a significant effect of parenting style and gender on adolescent social competence, indicating that different parenting approaches and gender identities meaningfully influence how adolescents develop and express social skills. However, the area of residence (urban or rural) does not significantly influence the social competence of adolescents. These results highlight the importance of parenting practices and gender-related experiences in adolescent social development.
