The Power of Audio in Education

Author(s) Dr. TAPAS KUMAR CHATTOPADHYAY

Abstract Audio has long been a transformative medium in the field of education. From the earliest days of radio broadcasts to the modern era of podcasts and digital platforms, the spoken word has carried knowledge across boundaries of geography, literacy, and socio-economic barriers. Audio is more than a supplement to text; it is a standalone pedagogical force that enhances inclusivity, bridges digital divides, and fosters lifelong learning.
This paper explores the power of audio in education through five key perspectives: (1) the policy perspective, need, and scope, which highlights the significance of integrating audio into educational frameworks; (2) broadcast as a bridge across the digital divide, enabling access for marginalized learners; (3) the role of community radio and iRadio in democratizing learning; (4) the emergence of podcasts as trendsetters, reshaping contemporary knowledge-sharing practices; and (5) the metaphor of sonic scrolls, illustrating how the spoken word serves as a timeless vehicle for wisdom and culture. The study demonstrates that audio, as both a traditional and digital medium, continues to be a powerful equalizer in inclusive and accessible education
