| Abstract | This study analyzes the interplay between literacy and workforce participation in Ernakulam District, Kerala, using 2011 Census data across 117 administrative regions. Ernakulam exhibits high literacy rates (mean: 94.83%, males: ~96.5%, females: ~95.3%), yet workforce participation varies significantly (overall: 38.21%, males: 53.50%, females: 21.50%). Gender disparities are pronounced, with a 30-34 - point workforce gap. These findings highlight structural barriers—social norms, skill mismatches, and urban job market constraints—limiting literacy’s translation into employment, particularly for females. Policy recommendations include vocational training, childcare support, and rural skill development to enhance workforce inclusion. This study underscores the need for targeted interventions to align Ernakulam’s educational achievements with economic outcomes |
