| Abstract | Abstract: Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, widely revered as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, was much more than a jurist and legal scholar. He was a visionary statesman whose interventions extended beyond constitutional drafting to the broader project of National Integration in the formative years of Independent India. Dr. Ambedkar’s pragmatic engagement with the challenges of integrating princely states—most notably Hyderabad and Kashmir—underscored his deep concern for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democratic consolidation. This paper seeks to critically examine Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to India’s post-independence integration. By situating his legal reasoning and strategic foresight within the wider historical context of decolonization, the paper argues that The political integration of more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence was not only a diplomatic achievement but also rested upon the constitutional vision laid down by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. His constitutional design, legislative proposals, and vision of indivisible sovereignty shaped the framework within which the Indian state successfully integrated princely states such as Junagadh, Travancore, Baroda, and the smaller central Indian principalities. Dr. Ambedkar’s role in the integration of princely states and his opposition to constitutional asymmetries such as Article 370 demonstrate a constitutional vision rooted in indivisible sovereignty, equality, and democratic governance, which remains vital to understanding India’s Nation-building process. In conclusion, this paper highlights the enduring contribution of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy in shaping 21st-century India, particularly in the domains of unity, justice, and constitutional discourse.” |
